New “fashion police” uniform unveiled for Ascot

Over the last few years, the standards at Royal Ascot have definitely started to slip. Hemlines have become shorter, spaghetti straps have become the norm and unsightly fascinators have been in abundance, and this is something that the bosses want to change. It’s a prestigious event, attended by some 300,000 people every year, and dressing properly should be part of the experience—that’s why they introduced Dress Code Assistants at last year’s meet and will be doing the same again this year, and the new uniform for this army of fashion police has just been unveiled.

The Dress Code Assistants will be dishing out advice and corrections to race-goers who have slightly missed the mark, so naturally, they need to be impeccably dressed too. Their outfits have been created by high-end brand Hobbs and last week model Amber le Bon stepped out in the new design, which includes a sleek silver shift dress and matching jacket, adhering to the rules set by Ascot bosses of modest hemlines and no spaghetti straps or strapless designs. The outfits were finished off with chic nude heels and elegant hats, and it’s hoped that this will set the scene for the event to give race goers an idea of how to structure their own outfits.

Strict rules are being enforced throughout the ground (particularly in the Royal Enclosure and the Grandstand) and the Assistants will be available both outside the venue and at the ticket stiles, providing last-minute makeovers should race-goers not be appropriately attired, ensuring everyone looks the part. It’s hoped that they’ll help bring back some style into proceedings, and although part of the fun over the last few years has been seeing what fashion horrors walk through the stiles (novelty outfits anyone?) it’ll be nice to see some proper elegance at this most prestigious of events.
