This year marks the 90th Birthday of the Oxford English Dictionary. English words have actually been collated for many years before, when on the 4th of April 1755 (some 173 years earlier) Samuel Johnson Jr, published, the first Dictionary of the English Language and is among the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language.

But, as we’re never one to miss a party, and as the OED celebrates the release of the first ever Oxford addition, we though we’d celebrate with a few of our favourites.

Very fashionable or up to date.

Contemporary

Following modern ideas in style or design.

 

 

Classic

Judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind.

Colourful

Judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind. Having much or varied colour; bright.

Authentic

Of undisputed origin and not a copy; genuine.

Made or done in the traditional or original way, or in a way that faithfully resembles an original.

 

 

 

Trench

First World War: originally referring to the type of coat worn by soldiers in the trenches.

Real Wool

The fine, soft curly or wavy hair forming the coat of a sheep, goat, or similar animal, especially when shorn and prepared for use in making cloth or yarn.

 

Timeless

Not affected by the passage of time or changes in fashion.

Inspired

Of extraordinary quality, as if arising from some external creative impulse.

Joy

Feeling, expressing, or causing great pleasure and happiness.

Buff

A person who is enthusiastically interested in and very knowledgeable about a particular subject.

Wild at Heart

Very enthusiastic or excited.

Adventure

An unusual and exciting or daring experience.

Life

Vitality, vigour, or energy.
