Duffle Weekend

The weathermen are forecasting another weekend of freezing temperatures and icy roads. The shortest day has passed, yet memories of the warm summer sun still seems almost a distant dream. The ground is cold. The fire is warm and in my lovely woollen jumper, I’m not sure that I’m quite ready to dig myself out of my winter hibernation.

Yet, as I venture out all wrapped up on a sparkling winters morning, I was amazed that out in the garden, Mother Nature is getting busy and seems to have other ideas. Whispers of spring are everywhere if you only take a look. I know it seems early and maybe I am willing it to be. But right under our noses, the slightest glimpse of the new spring buds are waiting patiently at the stage door of spring. Daffodils are teasing their heads through the icy grass and there, taking centre stage is the beautiful and charismatic Snowdrop.

Somehow against all the odds of winter, with grace and purity emerges such a fragile, delicate and enigmatic beauty. What more of an excuse do you need to wrap up warm and go and discover everything our wonderful countryside has to offer.

All the snowdrop gardens are recommended by and are open under the National Gardens Scheme or the Scottish Gardens Scheme, or for other charities. If you are travelling to visit snowdrop gardens we would suggest telephoning first to ensure that adverse weather conditions have not affected opening times.
