About Us

In the late 1800`s the British Admiralty designed a new all-purpose outerwear garment for use initially on destroyers- this coat became the duffle coat.

Original Montgomery- then called The Ideal Clothing Company- was amongst the first group of companies asked to make these coats. We are today the only surviving maker of these duffle coats.

Since then we have made duffles for the British Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force- along with most Allied countries throughout the Second  World War.

When you see the duffle’s shown in classic old movies or iconic pictures the chances are we made it. We are the oldest duffle coat maker in the world and the only one still in continuous production since then.

We make all our coats ion England, from Italian or English wool mix fabrics.

The attention to detail is what stands out for Montgomery product.

We also offer a no quibble money back guarantee if you are not totally satisfied with our products.

When you buy a Montgomery you are buying the real thing, from the real originator, still Made in England, and still a proudly British owned company.

Original and Best.

1896- THE FIRST IMAGE WE HAVE OF OUR COATS BEING USED BY THE ROYAL NAVY

As the oldest duffle coat maker in the world our history goes back a long way. these men are showing the original design of duffle coat- this design is in fact the second development which features a saddle shoulder. This feature was added to make the coat more durable as sailors and other workers were often asked to carry heavy loads on their shoulders. An added advantage was the improved weather resistance of the double layer of fabric.

OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS

During the great war of 1914-18 we made different duffles for British Army and royal Navy use. the colours varied as fabric was in short supply and often each unit may have had different coloured duffles. at this time we also continued our normal selling business and supplied many navies from Allied countries. the duffle had noe become standard issue across many countries- special short versions were developed for use by submariners.

PEACE DIVIDEND

After the Second World War most of the duffles we had made for various services here and across Europe were sold onto the open market as war surplus. these duffles were seen as a piece of clothing that could be worn by everyone as they were sold off very cheaply. The humble duffle had become the universal item of clothing that anyone could wear. Long before jeans if you wanted to show that we were all in this together it was good to be seen in a duffle. here are the Dutch Royal family.

THE PEOPLE ARE REVOLTING

Following the war years the duffle became a symbol of revolt amongst the thinking classes. The 60's started the switch from establishment power to people power. if you were going to the barricades it was best done in a duffle. Hard wearing, warm and classless this was the ideal garment of the protest movement.
